Abstract

The film industry uses dermatological findings to help viewers differentiate between heroes and villains. This study sought to determine whether there is a significant association between the presence of facial hair and character type.

Top 10 male heroes and villains were analyzed from the American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest Heroes and Villains list for the presence of facial hair. A total of 20 characters were analyzed from 19 films. Facial hair was defined as hair present on the face that could easily and clearly be identified as a beard, goatee, or mustache.

All 10 villains analyzed in this study had no facial hair compared to 5 heroes with this feature (100 % vs. 50 % respectively). The type of facial hair noted on heroes was a combination of beard and mustache. Fisher’s Exact test revealed a significant association between the presence of facial hair and character type (p=0.0325).

Based on this analysis, there appears to be a tendency to help viewers distinguish heroes from villains by using mutable features. The use of facial hair to identify heroes is notable because while not a dermatological disorder, previous research has revealed higher use of dermatological findings in antagonists compared to protagonists.

Introduction

Filmmakers use dermatological findings to help viewers differentiate between heroes and villains by depicting more dermatological lesions on villains when compared to heroes.1 The use of common skin conditions in this manner can create a negative perception, indirectly creating prejudice in our society against those with a similar appearance.

Various dermatological findings have been studied to better understand the correlation between the physical appearance of the character and their role in the film. A 2017 study analyzing classic movie heroes and villains identified higher frequency of alopecia, periorbital hyperpigmentation, deep rhytides, and scars in antagonist when compared to protagonists.1 Similarly, a study in 2018 analyzing animated films found similar results, further confirming the increased use of skin findings in antagonists versus protagonists. The study found statistically significant increases in the use of balding, periorbital darkness and moles in villains compared to heroes.2 Another study confirmed higher incidences of alopecia in villains compared to heroes.3

The findings of this study serve to further the understanding of the use of skin depictions in film. The use of facial hair including beard, mustache, and goatee in movie characters are not well studied. Therefore, this investigation explored filmmaker use of facial hair and character type.

Methods

The 10 highest ranked male heroes and villains were analyzed from the American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest Heroes and Villains list for the presence of facial hair.4 Total of 20 characters were analyzed from 19 films. The 19 films analyzed in this study included To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Dr. No (1963), Casablanca (1942), High Noon (1952), Rocky (1976), It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Psycho (1960), The Godfather: Part II (1974), Clockwork Orange (1971), Schindler’s List (1993), Chinatown (1974), Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), The Terminator (1984), and Wall Street (1987). Facial hair was defined as hair present on the face that could easily and clearly be identified as a beard, goatee, or mustache.

Certain characters were excluded from the study. Characters who did not reveal their face in the film or were portrayed as a creature or artificial intelligence were excluded from the study and the next listed character was included. Female characters were also excluded as this study only analyzed male protagonists and antagonists. After identifying the films and characters included in the study, the entire film was analyzed for changes in the use of facial hair in heroes and villains. The presence of beard, goatee, or mustache were recorded for each character type. Fisher’s Exact test was conducted to determine whether there exists a significant association between the presence of facial hair and character type.

Results

All 10 villains analyzed in this study had no facial hair compared to 5 heroes with this feature (100 % vs. 50 % respectively, Table 1). The five heroes that presented with facial hair included Indiana Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), T.E. Lawrence from Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Jefferson Smith from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and Tom Joad from The Grapes of Wrath (1940). The type of facial hair noted on all 5 heroes was a combination of beard and mustache. Fisher’s Exact test revealed a significant association between the presence of facial hair and character type (p=0.03).

Discussion

The use of facial hair appears to be used at a higher frequency in heroes verses villains unlike other dermatological findings analyzed in previous studies. Facial hair in characters George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life and Jefferson Smith from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was used to show hardships that the character was facing. After overcoming their adversity, facial hair was no longer present. It is interesting to note that the use of facial hair in protagonists serves to be used in a positive connotation to show the characters ability take on adversity and challenge themselves to overcome it.

Facial hair in men may also play a role in evolutionary biology. Etcoff notes that facial hair emphasizes male maturity and masculinity.5 Beards help to increase the size of the lower face, another masculine feature.5

Conclusion

Based on this analysis, there appears to be a tendency to help viewers distinguish heroes from villains by using mutable features of facial hair appearance. The use of facial hair to identify heroes is notable because while not a dermatological disorder, previous research has revealed higher use of dermatological findings in antagonists compared to protagonists. The use of facial hair is the first dermatological finding to be identified at a significantly higher rate in heroes when compared to villains. Understanding the use of different skin findings on characters may help uncover how media plays a role in helping viewers indirectly classify individuals into groups and deciphering an individual’s morals.
